Custom ankle bracing can aid in the relief of pain and instability associated with arthritis. If your ankle is painful with activity or you easily roll your ankle on uneven ground(chronic instability), a custom ankle brace may help you.
Gauntlet braces work like a stabilizing cast around your ankle so they make your ankle a little larger in circumference. Typically, quality athletic footwear and work boots will easily accommodate this brace.
Arthritis Pain
Custom foot orthoses cost $549 for adults and $450 for children.
Additional pairs ordered within a year(without another consult appointment) are $350 as we are able to use the same 3D mold
There is no HST on foot orthoses as they are prescribed medical devices
You should always consult your physician to discuss treatments.
Many people benefit from orthotics to relieve foot, ankle or knee pain from arthritis. Orthotics support your arches, improve alignment, helping to relieve pain and make it easier to move with comfort and confidence
Custom ankle bracing can aid in the relief of pain and instability associated with arthritis. If your ankle is painful with activity or you easily roll your ankle on uneven ground(chronic instability), a custom ankle brace may help you. Typically, you will be prescribed a custom ankle brace by your attending orthopaedic surgeon who will have greatest insight into the benefits of a custom ankle brace.
You should always consult your physician to discuss treatments. Often the x-ray report is a good indication of the severity of the degenerative changes to your knee and location, which helps in prescribing the appropriate brace. Many people benefit from a knee brace to relieve arthritic pain as the brace uses leverage to reduce pressure on the arthritic area, providing stability, relieving pain and improving comfort, mobility and confidence.
Bunions
Bunions may be hereditary or may be caused by poor fitting footwear. Poor foot mechanics or foot posture are likely causes. Feet that roll in excessively or flat feet are common examples of foot mechanics and foot posture.
Yes. Toe muscle strength is very important. Try picking up your sock or gathering a towel with your toes while your heel is elevated off the floor. And try to use your mind to spread your toes actively while you are seated.
Surgery is an option for the most extreme misalignment or when pain level is exquisite. Consult your physician for the possibility of a referral to an orthopaedic surgeon for a consult.

Compression Socks & Therapy
No. Compression socks are fashionable, available in bright colours, patterns and prints. Their stylish designs over a variety of fibers like cotton, wool, spandex and nylon. They can be sheer or opaque.
Compression socks are a medical device that must meet standards of performance. This means using particular fabrics and weaving techniques to ensure durability, ease of care and quality assurance. Nonetheless, there are products that we carry at different price points so you can find something affordable. Many people have access to 3rd party health insurance that may reimburse part of the costs.
Custom Footwear
Custom-made orthopaedic shoes cost, on average, approximately $1,600 – $2,250 per pair of shoes, while custom-made boots may range from $3,000 to $3,500 per pair.
Custom-made sandals would be in the range of $750 – $1,000 and could possibly exceed this amount in more complex cases.
Some extended health insurers may cover a portion of the cost. You will need a prescription from an MD outlining medical need. Insurance companies require that the practitioner has the appropriate qualifications and can justify your need for custom footwear. After an assessment at Ortho-Kinetics, we can help determine whether there is justification for them.
When you understand that the footwear are created to meet medical need, designed to improve function and made to increase comfort, the fashion aspect becomes a minor consideration.
Having said all that, these shoes and boots are offered in a wide range of stitching patterns, textures and colours, closures and boot heights. Once you put them on, they will feel beautiful.
Diabetes
Canadian Certified Pedorthists are an important component of the diabetic footcare team. They can help avoid major foot problems through proper supportive orthotics and shoe selection. Their expertise provides an assessment to look for structural abnormalities, excessive and risky pressures on the foot, and they can help identify signs of neuropathy or friction that could possibly lead to ulcerations.
Diabetes Canada recommends that all people with diabetes should have a foot examination at least once a year to avoid the risk of amputation. Long term complications in people with diabetes frequently start as foot problems, with infections leading to ulcer and possibly amputation.
Over-the-counter insoles could cause blisters if they are not right for your feet. Consider seeking the advice and expertise of a Canadian Certified Pedorthist for proper fitting foot orthotics.
If you develop a wound or cut your foot and are wearing light coloured socks, the light colour will allow you to more readily see that your wound is bleeding. This is especially important if you have poor sensation in your feet.
Forefoot & Toes
Yes. There are options that include fusing the joint or removing the spur on the top of the joint to improve motion and reduce pain
Neuromas are permanent structural changes to the tissue around the nerve. Orthotics can help to manage or reduce the pain.
Dress shoes are often a contributor to forefoot pain. Ideally, wearing well designed orthotics in thicker soled shoes with a lower heel is best. We can provide orthotics that fit into dress shoes and help to improve comfort.
Heel Pain
You can have arthritis in the joints of your feet, but plantar fasciitis is not arthritis. It is damage to the ligament-like structure that stretches from your heel to your toes.
You can have plantar fasciitis pain and not have a heel spur. You can also have a heel spur, seen on an x-ray, but not have any heel pain. Your doctor may prescribe an x-ray to rule out a fracture or arthritis.
Plantar fasciitis can occur the day after some trauma to your heel area. But the recovery can last several weeks or even months. Orthotics, rest, ice, reduced activity and physiotherapy can all help to speed up healing time
While Sever’s disease can be quite painful, especially with activity, there is no evidence that being active will cause any permanent damage. The pain may make it difficult to continue to play so adjusting the activity level to your child’s comfort level is important in how you help him/her manage the pain. Orthotics, rest, ice, reduced activity and physiotherapy can all help to speed up healing time. Ultimately, the condition will resolve on its own, but may take several months or longer.
Once the Achilles tendon is damaged, there is risk in prolonging the condition, worsening the condition, or, if you are middle-aged, suffering a rupture of the tendon.
Knee Pain
Foot orthotics can help various types of knee pain. With patellar femoral problems, the orthotics reduce the amount of rotation of your tibia (shin bone) which will help to mitigate your knee pain. The pain from osteoarthritis is improved by changing the amount of “bone-on-bone” pressure in the affected area of the joint.
Physiotherapy is always a smart decision after a knee injury, whether you get a brace or are fitted with foot orthotics. After a knee injury, the muscles around your knee need to be strengthened, and balance and range of motion needs to be improved.
A custom knee brace is $1750. Non-custom bracing for ligament or arthritic conditions ranges from $270 to $900. Non-custom braces for patella control range from $125 to $270
Many extended health insurers cover most of the cost of a brace. You will likely need a prescription and we will gladly provide an estimate (predetermination) before you purchase anything.

Varicose Veins
Chronic venous insufficiency is a failure of the valves in your veins, preventing proper transport of blood back to your heart, leading to pooling of blood, most commonly in your legs and feet.
Common signs include skin discoloration, swelling in your legs and ankles, and worse case, pain.
You may not be able to prevent it from occurring, but exercising regularly, avoiding prolonged standing, avoiding wearing high heels for prolonged periods, and maintaining proper weight can reduce your risk of further complications.
